Each year, more boaters are able to enjoy the pleasures of boating. Along with the increase in the number of people who becomes boaters, there is a concurrent increase in the number of accidents. Like all sports, boating depends upon knowledge of the equipment and the conditions necessary to insure the safety of the participants. The Coast Guard Auxiliary in East Tennessee works closely with the United States Coast Guard to increase the knowledge and skill of area boaters. By offering classes to the general public, the Auxiliary hopes to make the boating experience more enjoyable and safer for everyone on the water.

"Boating Safely" is a course designed for all boaters. The course includes: an introduction to boating, boating laws, personal safety equipment, navigation and safe boat handling as well as what steps to take in case of an emergency. The instructors are members of the Auxiliary who volunteer their time and expertise to teach the course.

The course is offered in several locations and at different times of the year. Most of the courses are offered in the early spring just before the boating season begins. Upon successful completion, participants are given certificates of attendance which may make them eligible for a reduction in their boat insurance rates.

For people who wish to continue to increase their knowledge and skills of boating beyond this basic course, the Coast Guard Auxiliary welcomes new members. All members of the Auxiliary have the opportunity to engage in ongoing training, which may be on the water or in a classroom setting.
